Congratulations to Dr Andy Tatnell, winner of the Early Career Impact Award

🎉 Congratulations to Dr Andy Tatnell, winner of the Early Career Impact Award at the Scottish International Policing Conference on 28 May 2025!

Although Andy couldn’t attend in person, the award was proudly announced during the event in recognition of his outstanding contribution to policing research and practice.

Andy was honoured for his impactful study on the Tutor Constable Model in Police Scotland, which strengthens how new recruits translate classroom learning into frontline practice and deepens their commitment to core policing values.

🌟 As the nominator noted:

“This learning phase sets a vital precedent for a recruit’s career, their relationship with the public, and their commitment to integrity, fairness, respect and human rights.”

His research has already influenced key developments, including:

✅ Shaping Police Scotland’s new Probationer Development Pathway
âś… Launching a trial of a new tutor model in a Scottish division
âś… Adoption of the approach by Hertfordshire Constabulary
âś… Sparking collaboration with policing and academic partners in Sweden, England, and beyond
âś… Accepted for presentation at the European Society of Criminology Conference, Athens, Sept 2025

👏 SIPR is proud to have supported this project through funding, knowledge exchange and international networking.

Dr Tatnell’s work shows how evidence-based research can drive meaningful change in policing, locally and globally.

Well done Andy!
