SIPR Acknowledgement Guidance

Policies

Purpose

This document sets out the standard wording and expectations for acknowledging support from the Scottish Institute for Policing Research. The aim is to ensure consistency, clarity, and appropriate recognition of SIPR support across all outputs.

Standard Wording for Publications

The following sentence should be used in journal articles, conference papers, formal reports, and other academic outputs where SIPR has provided support:

“This work was supported by the Scottish Institute for Policing Research (SIPR).”

Where journal format allows, the following sentence may also be included:

“The views expressed are those of the authors and do not necessarily reflect those of SIPR or its partners.”

Standard Wording for Media and Public Reports

For press releases, blogs, websites, newsletters, and public reports, the following wording should be used:

“This project was supported by the Scottish Institute for Policing Research (SIPR), a strategic collaboration between Scottish universities and policing partners supporting evidence led policing research.”

When Acknowledgement Is Required

Acknowledgement of SIPR should be included when:

  1. SIPR provides direct financial support.
  2. The work is commissioned or funded through a SIPR call or scheme.
  3. SIPR provides substantive programme support, coordination, or delivery input.
  4. The output forms part of a SIPR funded project or initiative.

Acknowledgement is not required where an individual is affiliated with SIPR but the work has not been supported financially or substantively by SIPR.

Where the Acknowledgement Should Appear

In academic publications, the wording should appear in the formal Acknowledgements section. If no such section exists, it should be included as a footnote on the first page.

In reports and policy briefs, it should appear on the acknowledgements page or within the introduction.

In media releases and blogs, it should appear within the main body of the text.

In presentations and conference materials, it should appear on the title slide or final slide.
