Over the last 20 years my research has focused on the relationship between policing, justice and gender. I have undertaken studies of: social and legal responses to child abuse since the Victorian period; the history of women in the UK police service; juvenile justice in Scotland and England after the Second World War; the social history of policing in Scotland. Research has been funded by the ESRC, the Leverhulme Trust and the Nuffield Trust. I am currently completing a book entitled Police and Community in Twentieth-Century Scotland, to be published by Edinburgh University Press.

Research:

Histories since 1800 of: policing; women in the police service; gender and criminal justice; youth justice; and responses to child abuse
