Presenter: Mikael Emsing, PhD. Police Education, Umea University, mikael.emsing@umu.se
Chair: Jonas Hansson, Police Education, Umea University, Jonas.hansson@umu.se
Mikael Emsing, PhD in Medical Sciences with an orientation towards public health and epidemiology, MSc. in pedagogy, and also trained at the Royal Academy of Music in Stockholm, Sweden where hei studied Afro/jazz music. He is currently working as a teacher at the Unit for Police Education where he teaches at the basic police training programme, and at the bachelor’s and master’s programmes. He is also active as a musician, albeit not professionally, but in my own trio New Orbits. My current research projects relate to the propensity to report intimate partner violence, and the stress and mental health among Colombian police recruits.
My presentation will be largely based of my PhD Thesis “Conflict Management and Mental Health among Swedish Police Officers and Recruits” which I defended in January this year. As the name suggests the focus of my thesis was conflict management and mental health, but also included the first steps towards developing an instrument to measure various aspects of conflict management, specifically tailored towards the policing context.
I will also touch upon current research projects which include a project conducted in cooperation with the police education in Colombia as well as a scientific evaluation of an intervention that is focused on increasing the number of capable guardians in relation to intimate partner violence in rural Sweden.
