SPACE is pleased to announce the publication of a new Policy and Practice Briefing:
Sworn to protect, left unprotected: a mixed-methods exploration of the gendered toll of policing on women’s health and wellbeing
Authored by Dr Mahnoz Illias, Professor Kathleen Riach and Dr Evangelia Demou from the University of Glasgow, the briefing explores how organisational structures, workplace culture and workplace social support shape the health and wellbeing of women in UK policing across different career and life stages.
The research highlights the impact of organisational injustice on women’s mental, physical, social and workplace wellbeing, while identifying workplace social support as an important protective factor.
Drawing on the findings, the briefing sets out recommendations for policy and practice, including leadership training focused on organisational justice, equity and inclusion; more consistent gender-sensitive wellbeing policies; improved knowledge sharing; and routine monitoring of workforce health and wellbeing data.
The briefing provides important evidence to help inform workforce wellbeing, gender equality and organisational reform across policing, with a focus on improving health, retention and career progression for women.
