Dr Richard Jones is Senior Lecturer in Criminology at Edinburgh Law School, University of Edinburgh. He holds a PhD in Criminology from the Institute of Criminology, University of Cambridge. At Edinburgh he was the first Director of the MSc in Criminology and Criminal Justice, and has previously acted as Director of Postgraduate Taught Studies for Edinburgh Law School. He teaches Masters courses on Cybercrime and Cyber Security, and Surveillance and Security. He was co-creator of the Masters courses on Media and Crime, Penal Policy, and Theoretical Criminology. He has supervised eight doctoral researchers to successful completion, and welcomes applications for doctoral research on topics relating to his areas of expertise.
Richard specialises in studying the implications of new technologies in crime, crime prevention, policing and criminal justice.
He has undertaken research in fields including cyber security, cybercrime, surveillance, security, and resilience. His research interests include: cyber security; surveillance systems; AI; policing cybercrime; policing and crime prevention technologies; resilience; and criminal justice policy. He has undertaken research on large collaborative interdisciplinary projects funded by the EU and the UK EPSRC, and has experience on working collaboratively with partners from the public and private sectors, as well as with academic partners from science and engineering.
