Preventing Suicide in Policing: What the Evidence Means for Policy and Practice
Authored by Dave Marshall, Lecturer in Criminology at the University of the West of Scotland and Doctoral Researcher at the University of Strathclyde.
The briefing draws on an updated systematic review of international evidence on suicide and suicidal thoughts and behaviours among police personnel. It explores the complex interaction between clinical, interpersonal, occupational and organisational factors, and considers what the evidence means for prevention in policing.
A key message is that support must be trusted, not simply provided, with prevention requiring a layered approach that combines trusted support, good organisational practice, early responses to distress and individualised management of acute risk.
